Department of Complex Tissue Regeneration

RESEARCH OVERVIEW

The Department of Complex Tissue Regeneration focuses its efforts on developing new biomaterials, engineering of biomaterial surface properties, scaffolds, improvement of cell- and biomaterial-based regenerative medicine, design of high-throughput screening methods and (micro)bioreactors with the goal of improving methods for complex tissues and organ regeneration. The department specializes in fabrication techniques such as biofabrication, and micro- and nano-fabrication. With a focus on developing three-dimensional cell cultures, the department also has significant expertise in imaging and methods for studying cell behaviour with complex microenvironments. While historically the department led in musculoskeletal tissue regeneration, today there is a wider focus on technology platforms and fundamental biological concepts that span all tissues and organs.

Keywords: biofabrication, organ-on-chip, biomaterials, cell-material interface
